Step 1: Watch this YouTube video on Rule of Thirds and Leading Lines
Step 2: READ the following links to better understand Photo Composition
* Rule of Thirds
* Lines
* General Composition Tips (click the links under the photos for more info.)
Step 3: Think of a place to go for a "5 minute walk" Here are some examples. (note: not all of these are GREAT examples)
Step 4: Take your camera or phone on a "5 minute walk." Look specifically for Leading Lines and try to compose your images using the Rule of Thirds.
Step 5: As you go, take LOTS of photos. Simplify, Zoom in, Fill the Frame, Change the Point of View, Try Dramatic Angles, Watch for Aliens, Look for Frames, etc. Take at least 50 photos.
Step 6 : Select your best 5-6 best images from the 50 you took. REMEMBER: look for photos that have a strong composition. Look for dramatic angles, interesting perspectives, frames, leading lines and rule of thirds. They should all 5 or 6 be strongly related to each other. In other words, they should look like they belong together. Look for repetition and similar color schemes in each of the 5-6 photos. You may crop the photo if doing so will improve the composition.
CREATING THE COLLAGE
Create a new canvas in Paint.NET (File, new) Make it 150 PPI and about 8"x 10" or 10" x 8". (Note: this size is not necessary, it is just a guideline. Feel free to change it if you want a different orientation. For example, make it 10"x10" for a square.... or 8"x12" for a longer, skinnier rectangle.)
You will need to open each photo in Paint.NET. Select ALL, copy and then paste it into a NEW LAYER in your blank canvas. ALWAYS SELECT KEEP CANVAS SIZE. Then, you will need to adjust the size of the photo. MAKE SURE you put each new photo in its own new layer.
You will do this for your 5-6 best images. Arrange your images in any way you think looks nice within your background.
Look at these examples (BUT do NOT add text) There are also some examples from previous classes at the bottom of this page. You may choose to do it similar to them, OR BE CREATIVE. :)
When finished, you may adjust the color of your background layer. Pick a color from your images to UNIFY the composition....or you can pick a contrasting color that makes your images POP. It is possible that your photos fill the entire frame and you don't see any background showing at all.
Save this as a .pdn file. Save as YourLastName5MinWalkCollage.PDN
Then, save it as a JPEG so the layers will flatten. Save it as YourLastName5MinWalkCollage.JPG
